5 Common Characteristics of Pride!

There are some things God absolutely hates! One of those things is PRIDE (Proverbs 6:16-19)! Pride is at the root of the sins you commit. Pride turns off the faucet of grace (James 4:6). Pride is detected by everyone except the person who has it.

Have you ever wondered how you function when you are proud? What are the elements of pride? Turn to Daniel 3. In this passage you will find 5 common characteristics on how a proud person operates.

You promote self – I know this is really stating the obvious, but let’s not overlook it. In Daniel 3:1 you find King Nebuchadnezzar creating “an image of gold” that was 90 feet tall (the distance between home plate and 1st base on a professional baseball field) and 9 feet wide! It was a common practice to erect images with massive proportions to impress others. The Bible doesn’t specifically state what the statue represented, some say it was himself, and others say it could have been an obelisk. Regardless of what the actual image was you know that King Nebuchadnezzar was using it to promote himself throughout his kingdom. Proud people love to promote themselves! They endorse their own ideas, opinions, philosophies, viewpoints, sides of the story, and so forth. Today’s culture hasn’t help with the emphasis on having a high self-esteem (which is nothing but pride and selfishness). You may not seek to resurrect a gold statue, but do you strive to advance yourself in words, actions, media, etc? Are you trying to be somebody? If so, you are proud.

You eliminate distractions – King Nebuchadnezzar placed his statue of gold “…in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon” (Daniel 3:1). Why there? Because there was nothing to detract from the magnificence of his image! In other words, there was nothing in a plain to compete with the King’s statue; all attention was focused on him. When proud people have something to say or show they fervently try to reduce any distractions that would take away from their platform. Have you ever tried to quiet everyone around you before you try to speak? (This doesn’t apply to a public speaker who is trying to give announcements or instructions, etc). Have you ever gone to a quiet room or place with your group of followers so you can tell your story with minimal distractions? Have you ever belittled someone else in order to make yourself look better? If so, you are proud.

You seek attention from authorities and other leaders – When you read Daniel 3:2-3 you find King Nebuchadnezzar gathering together all types of leaders (rulers) throughout his kingdom to attend the dedication ceremony of his gold statue. Proud people are always trying to seek attention from people in authority hoping they will like what they see and/or hear. What’s unique in this case is King Nebuchadnezzar IS the top authority, yet he still sought attention from other leaders. Do you try to “brownnose” with authorities in your life (boss, coach, pastor, teacher, parents, etc) in hopes they will accept you? Have you ever tried to “hob-knob” with your superiors hoping they will endorse you? Have you ever tried to “get in cool” with your boss in hopes for that promotion?  Beware of someone who “cow-tails” with his superiors and overlooks his inferiors. If so, you are proud.

You expect others to agree with and honor you – After reading Daniel 3:4-7 you find King Nebuchadnezzar commanding all “…people, nations, and languages” to fall down (bow) and worship the golden image. Bowing means you are willing to submit. Although King Nebuchadnezzar had the authority to command people to bow and worship he was still seeking to have the people agree that he was a great king and they must honor him for it. Most proud people don’t have this kind of authority, however they act like it and attempt to get others to agree with and honor them. Have you ever argued with someone till they agreed with your point of view? Do you expect others to recognize you for some kind of service you did or project you accomplished? Do you anticipate others to honor you for your performance academically, athletically, financially, physically, economically, etc? If so, you are proud.

You are offended when others don’t respect you – Many are familiar with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refusing to bow down and worship the golden image. They were more concerned about obeying the God of heaven rather than an earthly King (Daniel 3:16-18). I want you to notice something in v.19. King Nebuchadnezzar was very angry (“…full of fury…”) that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to obey, he got offended! He was all bent out of shape, especially his face, because three kids would not respect him! So he sought revenge and commanded that the fiery furnace be heated up seven times than normal and had them thrown in (read the rest of the chapter to find out what happened!). What’s the principle here? Proud people are always very offended when people don’t respect them. They start thinking, “How dare you disrespect me! Don’t you know who I am?” Do you get upset when someone doesn’t listen to you? Are you insulted when your idea gets overlooked? Are you hurt when somebody ignores you? Are you slighted when others neglect to thank you for something? Do you take note of who didn’t attend your birthday party? Are you offended when you realize who didn’t send you a gift for a special occasion? If so, you are proud.

I know this post may have hit the heart strings; as it does for me. Always remember this, God honors and promotes the humble (Phil. 2:5-11; Jam. 4:6-10)!

The Race of Faith!

What is neat about reading and studying the New Testament is that the Christian life is often compared to everyday things, events, or practices in order to convey spiritual truth. Many times in Scripture you will find the Christian life illustrated in farming, military, and sports terms.  A good teacher will strive to use illustrations that connect with his or her students. Well…the greatest Teacher of all…Jesus Christ did the same thing as well as many of the writers of Scripture, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Here in Hebrews 12:1-2 you are presented with an awesome metaphor that conveys what you must be doing spiritually every day, and that is running the race of faith! As a Christian, you have been commissioned by God to run the race of faith and it is vital that your run well! However, many times Christians, young or old, can become spiritually distracted or exhausted while running the race of faith. This post is designed to encourage you and to call your attention on how and why you must run the race of faith and will conclude with the rewards! Martin Luther said, “The true, living faith, which the Holy Spirit instills into the heart, simply cannot be idle.”

1. Requirements for Running - God layouts three requirements on HOW He wants you to run the race of faith!

  1. Lay aside all weights (12:1a) -It would be very odd if Michael Phelps in the next summer Olympics wore shoes, baggy jeans, and a poncho to compete for the gold medal. Everyone would think he is crazy and stupid for not taking the time to assure that he is aerodynamic in the water. Same concept spiritually, a weight is often something harmless, and in many cases sinless, that diverts your attention, saps your energy, and dampens your enthusiasm for God. What is slowing (or weighing) you down in the race of faith? Sports? Relationships? Technology? News? Career? Popularity? Fashion? Friends? You must lay aside (cast away) those things in order to run well!
  2. Put off besetting sins (12:1b) - Anything that is in direct disobedience to God’s Word. In many cases the reason sin slows you down. Even Christ’s disciples had besetting sins if unbelief (or lack of faith). They doubted God’s provision (Matt. 6:30). They questioned God’s protection (Matt. 8:26). They hesitated about God’s presence and promises (Matt. 14:31). Sin will always distract you from running the race of faith well! Put off the sin!
  3. Run with endurance (12:1c) - A good athlete will physically and mentally prepare himself to compete with endurance. You must spiritually prepare yourself to keep pressing towards the goal line (Phil. 3:14). Stay focused!

2. Reasons for Running - There are two reasons WHY you must diligently run the race of faith!

  1. Jesus Christ is the Author of your faith (12:2)! - Jesus Christ is the originator/founder of your faith. In Him is the beginning of all true faith, apart from Him there is no true faith (Heb. 5:7-9)! The race of faith starts when you trust Jesus Christ as your personal Savior only (John 14:6) for salvation. Please click here to learn more about what it means to be biblically saved.
  2. Jesus Christ is the Finisher of your faith (12:2)! - Jesus Christ has perfected the way of faith since He reached its end successfully. He displayed a perfect example on how to walk by faith (see Matthew 4:1-11 to get started). Therefore, He cares about how you run the race of faith.

3. Rewards for Running - Any type of competition you participate in there is always a motivating reward. The Bible informs you of at least two rewards in the race of faith.

  1. Faithful Christians are honored by God -Read through the “hall of faith” in Hebrews 11 and give special attention to verse 6, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarded that diligently seek him.” God rewards those who have a keen desire to pursue Him.
  2. Faithful Christians receive an incorruptible crown -Read 1 Corinthians 9:24-25. God gives rewards that do not rust or break. For a brief time I worked as a termite technician, in other words, I killed bugs! Every new start (new customer) I was required to inspect and if needed treat the attic for insects. While doing that I noticed that many homeowners store a lot of “junk” in their attics! Sound familiar? Among many other things I saw many old trophies, plaques, medals, certificates, etc all from the past sitting in a box collecting dust! Something that was of extreme value is not worthless junk! Many times you get caught up in pursuing earthly treasures that you neglect pursing God’s incorruptible trophies that will last forever and bring Him mega-enjoyment! Let’s pursue God’s trophies!

There is no greater joy in living your life by faith proving to God that you daily trust Him. Are you running the race of faith God’s way? Remember, faith honors God and God honors faith!

Your Spiritual Workout Plan!

We all like to be physically fit, trimmed, toned, and in some cases muscular. In order to achieve those goals we would have to consistently hit the gym for a vigorous workout. Effective weightlifters and exercisers establish goals, follow a workout plan, and in some cases hire a trainer in order to successfully progress physically. Next time you see someone who is physically fit it reveals a lot about their determination, discipline, and dedication to take care of their physical body.

More importantly, and the point of this article, how is your spiritual workout going? Are you spiritually flabby? Have you become lazy in your spiritual “weightlifting”? Have you lost the determination to build spiritual muscle? Have you lost the discipline to hit the “spiritual gym”? Have you lost the dedication to spiritually grow?

Looking at the current condition of many churches, families, individuals, schools, and overall culture the answer would have to be “yes.” Sadly, Christians have become spiritually lazy.

Take a minute and turn to Philippians 2:12-13. You must biblically understand the believer’s role (v.12) and God’s role (v.13) in sanctification.

1) The Believer’s Role in Sanctification (2:12) – Because of what Christ did for you (Philippians 2:5-11) there is something you now must do and that is to make a concentrated effort to spiritually grow towards Christlikness. The phrase “…work out your own salvation…” is the main verb calling for the energy to bring something to completion, fulfillment, or to the intended goal. In other words, Paul is urging you to keep on growing spiritually. You have the responsibility to aggressively and energetically pursue spiritual growth. You must keep working out your salvation till your glorification (also see Romans 6:19; 2 Corinthians 7:1; Ephesians 4:1; 1 Timothy 6:11-12).

Now, some people incorrectly confuse this phrase by thinking it means to work for your salvation, in other words, works salvation, but Ephesians 2:8-9 and Titus 3:5 blows that thinking out of the water. Furthermore, if you closely look at this verse it says to WORK OUT. Therefore, as a Christian this means your role in sanctification is to take the time each day to build “spiritual muscle” with fear and trembling, these are proper reactions that seek to avoid sin, spiritual laziness, and dishonor to God.

2) God’s Role in Sanctification (2:13) – The only true and living God takes on the responsibility to make you what He wants you to be! God inwardly energizes you to obey and serve Him by giving you the willingness and ability to spiritually grow! He wants you to purposefully choose, energetically perform, and live what is right and biblical. Why does God do this? Because your spiritual growth is what makes God happy! This is what pleases Him! God receives mega-enjoyment and super-satisfaction when you give Him your best! Wow!

In summary, your sanctification (spiritual growth) is God actively energizing you inwardly while you carry out that desire outwardly! You must produce on the outside (v.12) what God has planted on the inside (v.13) and that desire is to be more like Christ in every area of your life!

Question: What are some indicators that someone is taking his or her spiritual growth seriously?

I would love to hear from you and help you in anyway I can.
